Bug Bogart is the leading man alter ego of queer musician/ producer Julia Wittmann (they/ she). Bug’s debut alt-rock album Takes A Bite will be released in the Fall of 2026, with the debut single “Baby Boy” coming June 12th 2026.
Wittmann braved the Toronto beat with their band Absolute Treat for nearly a decade, and all the while cut their teeth as a session player with other Canadian artists such as Ducks Ltd, Breeze, CJ Wiley, Wild Black, and Nyssa. Less publicly, Wittmann has been writing and recording music under various pseudonyms since teenagehood. Bug was born out of a need to loudly self-express beyond the outfit of a band, with songwriting that feels urgent and individualistic. More than personality and absurdity, the writing on Takes A Bite is resistance and criticism - against homophobia, against misogyny, against AI, against capitalism.
Bug Bogart’s musical influences span several decades, though his soul spends most of its time in the 80’s and 90’s. From Talking Heads to Roxy Music, from Robert Palmer to Pulp, Bug’s an earnest man who enjoys a big band, winking humour, and campy theatrics. He’s also got a penchant for indie-sleaze and dance-rock - an interest made obvious by his guitar and synthesizer tones (and his cowbell). His songs have moments reminiscent of The Rapture, Daft Punk, and early Metric.
The album Takes A Bite was recorded, produced, and mixed out of Wittmann’s basement apartment, Giant Studio, and Deep Water Studio, all in Toronto’s west end. The Bug Bogart band is packed with Toronto buddies - on select songs, Bradley Connor performs drums, Kat McLevey performs bass, Johnny Spence performs keys and synthesizers, and background vocals include a hearty selection of Wittmann’s contact list. Members of Absolute Treat, Blush, CJ Wiley, Kali Horse, Praises, and other Toronto acts make sly appearances throughout the album.
Takes A Bite is everything you’re not expecting… a sacreligious chant sung by a queer/ lesbian/ nonbinary choir, a disco blues duet between a wife and a secretary, a bilingual club banger, more than one song with 5/4 meter breaks… the chaos continues.
